Philipp Hangen (born March 5, 1848 in Biebelsheim , † August 23, 1920 in Mainz ) was a German lawyer and politician .

Hangen was the son of the landowner and mayor of Biebelsheim Philipp Hangen and his wife Christine née Emmerling. On May 3, 1880, he married Anna Susanna Billhard (* 1857), the daughter of the Mainz high school teacher Cornelius Billhard (1829–1862) and Bertha née Heckler (* 1833).

Life

After attending grammar schools in Kreuznach and Worms, Hangen studied law at the University of Giessen . During his studies he became a member of the Germania Gießen fraternity . He took part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, most recently as a lieutenant . After his exams in 1870 and 1872 and his doctorate as Dr. jur. through the University of Giessen in October 1871, he became a lawyer in Mainz in 1877, and in 1896 a regional judge at the regional court of the province of Rheinhessen . There he was presiding judge of the Chamber of Commerce. Around 1897 he made a contribution to the introduction of the German Civil Code (BGB). In 1899 he was High Court Judge at the Higher Regional Court of Darmstadt , in 1901 he became a member of the examination committee for the judicial and administrative specialist and 1905 President of the District Court of the province of Rheinhessen in Mainz. From 1911 he was a member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse , appointed by the Grand Duke for life . He took his parliamentary oath on December 19, 1910. His mandate ended with the November Revolution in 1918. In 1916 he became a privy councilor and retired in 1919.
