His writing activities include narrative works, mostly in the various varieties of fantasy . But he also uses the genres of crime and horror . A narrative technique used in most stories is the cross genre , mostly a mixture of fantasy and other elements. He prefers to write series and novel cycles and is an extremely prolific writer. 29 books have been published since 2013 (as of September 2018), 17 of them in different series.
His first fantasy novel, Raven Whispering , was published in 2013, followed by a second part two years later, Crow Dance , from the same cycle, God Eye . This first cycle was dedicated to classic fantasy themes and mixed them with a rough and pointedly dirty language - untypical for the genre .
Also in 2013 he started the series of shadow plants , which was laid out in nine parts and which he completed in 2015. The cycle combines sci-fi , in the narrower sense dystopia and cyberpunk , with elements of fantasy, especially the use of magic in a high-tech world is striking. The series has a clear anti-capitalist and anti-patriarchal message. At the end of 2017, the short film SCHATTENGEWÄCHSE - Showdown at ARCADI was made , which offers an insight into the world of shadow plants.
In 2018 the author devoted himself again to cyberpunk with the single volume Cybiz: The Color of Night . The novel, however, is not a continuation of the shadow plants series , but stands for itself.
In 2015 the first volume of the historical fantasy Das Reich des Johannes - Pela Dir was published . The novel refers to the mystical priest king John , whose alleged letter Joannis presbiteri Epistola was mentioned for the first time in 1165. The second part of the series followed in 2017: Fennmark .
The first two volumes of the series Der Traumermittler appeared in 2016 . The series combines classic elements of the crime novel with the genre of mystery . So the investigator solves his cases in a dream, through the use of lucid dreaming , or lucid dreaming.
Similar to shadow plants, the wasteland saga , which appears in 2017, also takes place in a dystopian future, which is noticeably based on Mad Max and combines the genres of western , post-apocalypse and fantasy. While the plot of the first volume is reminiscent of a road movie , the second volume plays at a fixed location in Prak-City - obviously based on the Czech capital Prague and provided with many motifs and myths of the city. The series was completed in 2017 with the fourth volume.
In 2018 the political arabesque Between the Chairs , the author's first political novel, was published . The tone of the novel is strongly feminist and portrays the landscape of the German political talk programs. Also in 2018 was the fantasy novel Der Grenzwächter , which can be attributed to the genre Contemporary Fantasy or Urban Fantasy. The idea popularized by Neil Gaiman that gods depend on the beliefs of people is contrasted here with a different concept.
As a prequel for the "Violent Earth" series, Schmidt contributed two volumes and wrote the individual volumes Escape from the Underworld - An end-of-time western fantasy that takes place in a cave system underground, as well as the fantastic novel Master of Dark Paths . The latter is apparently based on the shooting of the film The Crow and begins after the death of the main actor Brandon Lee in the book [bʀanˌdɔn] and establishes itself as a classic underworld journey .
From May 31, 2017 to May 23, 2018, his 52-episode regional thriller Schwarz in Schwarz was published weekly on Wednesdays in the daily Anzeiger des Schwäbisches Tagblatt. The novel was published as a print on July 29, 2018, with numerous black and white illustrations.
