Philippe Gardent (born March 15, 1964 in Belleville ) is a French handball coach and former handball player .
Player career
The 1.84 m tall Philippe Gardent played on the position of the circuit . In his youth he worked for Stade français in Paris . In 1982 he moved to the Paris Université Club . In 1985, the then top club USM Gagny signed him, with whom he became French champions in 1986 and 1987 and won the cup in 1987. After five years he went to USAM Nîmes , with whom he won another championship in 1991. In 1992 he joined the financially strong OM Vitrolles , with whom he was again champion in 1994 and 1996 and cup winner in 1993 and 1995. Internationally, he won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1993 . A year later he lost to FC Barcelona in the final . In 1996 he ended his career. In 2002 he was voted France's best circuit runner of all time.
In the French national team , Gardent made his debut in 1983 at the Mediterranean Games , where he saw the red card in his first game . At the 1992 Olympic Games , he won the bronze medal. At the following World Cup in 1993 he lost to the Russian team in the final. He celebrated his greatest successes at the 1995 World Cup with the world championship title. By 1995, the long-time captain had played 298 international matches in which he scored 635 goals.
Coaching career
After the end of his career, Philippe Gardent took over the coaching position at Chambéry Savoie HB in 1996 , to which he remained loyal until 2012. Under his leadership, Chambéry won the championship in 2001 and the league cup in 2002. He was also ten times runner-up and four times cup finalist. At European level he was in the quarter-finals of the 2002/03 Cup Winners ' Cup and the 2007/08 EHF Cup . From 2012 to 2015 he coached Paris Saint-Germain , with whom he became champion in 2013 and reached the final of the cup. In the EHF Champions League 2013/14 he failed in the quarterfinals to MKB-MVM Veszprém . He also won the French Cup in 2014 and 2015 and the French Championship in 2015. He has been training Fenix Toulouse handball since summer 2015 .
