Life and games

Keyaerts grew up with five siblings. During his childhood and youth he played chess , collected puzzles and later became interested in the strategy board game Full Métal Planète (1988) and The Settlers of Catan (1995). Keyaerts completed his studies in mathematics with a master's degree, and he also studied computer science, painting and graphics.

Keyaert's first publication was the 1999 Eurogames / Descartes strategy game Vinci , which deals with the rise and fall of civilizations in Europe. Among other things, the game was on the selection list for the Game of the Year 2000 and reached fifth place in the German Games Prize . In 2001, the author's second game, Evo, was released. Set back in prehistoric times, players have to ensure the genetic development and survival of their dinosaur race. Evo was nominated for the German Games Award and was named "Game of the Year (Traditional)" by Games Magazine 2002. In 2004, Space Blast was followed by a comparatively simple tactical game in which three to six players with spaceships fight a space battle on a hexagonal grid . In contrast to the two previous titles, the game received little attention.

With Small World , published by Days of Wonder in 2009 , Keyaerts further developed his first game Vinci : Small World took over its basic mechanisms and combined them with new game elements and a more humorous fantasy theme . Among other things, Small World was recognized as the “ Game of Games - Games Hit for Experts 2009” and in the following year received the “Special Jury Prize” of the As d'Or - Jeu de l'Année . Since its release, the game has been translated into ten languages and has sold around 100,000 copies to date. To date, six expansions and one implementation for the Apple iPad have been released, and in the summer of 2011 the publisher also released a new, stand-alone game called Small World Underground .

In the summer of 2011, the author's new game, Olympos , was released, which was awarded the As d'Or - Jeu de l'Année “Grand Prix” in France in 2012 . The strategy game, which is thematically set in ancient Greece , also revolves around the construction and expansion of civilizations, but focuses on other aspects compared to Vinci and Small World . The military plays a lesser role, but time management as well as technological development and the religiosity of civilization are in the foreground.

Keyaerts lives in Brussels with his wife and son . Apart from game development, he also teaches mathematics.
