Phillip Joel Hughes (born November 30, 1988 in Macksville , New South Wales , † November 27, 2014 in Sydney , New South Wales) was an Australian Test - and One-Day International - cricketer . He played nationally for South Australia and the Worcestershire CCC in England. He was a left-handed opening batsman . He made his debut for the Australian national team in the 2009 season at the age of 20.

Hughes was born in a small town on the north coast of New South Wales. His parents were Greg, a farmer, and Virginia, who was from Italy. He also had a brother and a sister. Hughes was also a talented rugby league player. He played cricket for the Macksville RSL Cricket Club, for which he was twelve years old in the first team. At the age of 17 he moved to Sydney, where he played successfully for the Western Suburbs District Cricket Club. In 2007 he took part in the U-19 World Cup.

During a Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground on November 25, 2014, Hughes was batsman (with a personal score of 63 not out) on the neck of a bouncer of bowler Sean Abbott (New South Wales) met. Hughes was wearing a helmet. He collapsed and was resuscitated by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He was then taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney for surgery and an artificial coma.

The game was stopped immediately. The next day, Cricket Australia also canceled the other two shield matches taking place at the time .

Hughes died of subarachnoid hemorrhage two days later .

The second matchday of the third test between Pakistan and New Zealand in the United Arab Emirates has been canceled and the game has been extended by one day. The tour match between Cricket Australia XI and India was also canceled .
