The Sydney Thunder are an Australian Cricket - franchise that since the 2011/12 season in the Australian Twenty20 -Liga, the Big Bash League play. Their home stadium is the Spotless Stadium in Sydney . They share the city with their league rivals Sydney Sixers . In the 2015/16 season they were able to win the Big Bash League for the first time.

history

The Sydney Thunder were founded in 2011 as part of the introduction of the Big Bash League . On April 6, 2011, they were presented along with the other teams in the league and assigned the color Electric Green . The intended stadium was the ANZ Stadium and thus not the Sydney Cricket Ground which is used in the city by the New South Wales cricket team . This was assigned to league rivals Sydney Sixers. The West Indians Chris Gayle and Fidel Edwards were committed as overseas players for the first season . As captain was David Warner appointed. In the first season they could only win two games, finishing last.

For the new season Warner left the club to city rivals and the planned engagement of Shahid Afridi failed after the Pakistani association initially refused to give its approval and later gave it only limited. In the season , the group stage was disappointing and you placed when you couldn't win a game, again bottom of the table.

With two engagements from Sri Lankan players, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Ajantha Mendis , an attempt was made to improve the team. However, in the preliminary round only one victory was achieved in the preliminary round and so the last place was achieved in the third season in a row.

Thunder had made numerous changes in the 2014/15 season . The South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis was signed and a new coach named Paddy Upton was appointed. However, this was not enough to bring about a significant improvement and so one was second to last with two wins.

For the 2015/16 season , the renovated Spotless Stadium was used as a new home. The preliminary round went well, so they could beat their city rivals Sixers for the first time and finally placed fourth in the table and thus reached the semi-finals for the first time. There you met the Adelaide Strikers and were able to prevail with eight wickets. In the following final they met the Melbourne Stars and won it with three wickets and thus achieved the tournament victory. The team's star in both playoff games was batsman Usman Khawaja .
