Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka (born November 3, 1955 in Claremont , Natal ) is a South African politician of the COPE party . Until 2009 she was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and from 2005 to 2008 she was Vice President of the country. Since 2013 she has been President of the United Nations Unit for Equality and Women's Empowerment .

Life

After graduating from high school , Mlambo-Ngcuka enrolled at the National University of Lesotho , where she earned a bachelor's degree in social science and education in 1980 . She then worked as a teacher until 1983 . After founding the Natal Organization of Women (NOW), an offshoot of the UDF , she was the organization's first female president . From 1984 to 1987 Mlambo-Ngcuka was director of the Young Women's Christian Association in Geneva . At University College London in 1988 she qualified further in gender policy and development planning, after which she was managing director of a development planning company in Cape Town . In 1990 she moved to the World University Service South Africa , where she was responsible for literary development in rural areas. In 2003 she did her Masters at the University of Cape Town .

From 1994 Mlambo-Ngcuka was a member of parliament , from 1996 to 1999 she was Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry in the Mandela cabinet . In 1997 she was sent to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ANC, at the same time she was vice chairman of the party in the Western Cape Province . From 1999 to 2005 she was Minister for Raw Materials and Energy, and in 2004 she was also Minister for Culture, Science and Technology. After Vice President Jacob Zuma was dismissed , President Thabo Mbeki appointed the previous minister as the new South African Vice President on June 22, 2005 . In September 2008, she and some ministers resigned after the ANC replaced Mbeki with Kgalema Motlanthe . Her successor as Vice President was Baleka Mbete .

Since 2008 Mlambo-Ngcuka has been running the Umlambo Foundation , a foundation for school and teacher development. At the end of February 2009 she joined the newly founded Congress of the People , which also includes other Mbeki supporters. In addition, she enrolled at the University of Warwick for doctoral studies .

Since August 19, 2013 she has held the rank of Under-Secretary-General of the UN as Executive Director of the organization “United Nations Unit for Equality and Empowerment of Women”, or UN Women for short .

Mlambo-Ngcuka is a member of the International Gender Champions (IGC) network, which advocates gender equality in international organizations.

She is married to Bulelani Ngcuka.
