Picea neoveitchii is a species fromthe pine family (Pinaceae). It is native to China.

description

Picea neoveitchii grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 15 meters and diameters of up to 50 centimeters at chest height . The crown is broadly conical. The gray scaled bark is peeling off. The hairless bark of the strong twigs is initially light yellow and can be slightly brown in color. By the second year it turns gray to yellow-gray and by the third year it turns gray to dark gray.

The slightly resinous, purple-brown winter buds are spherical. The curved needles have a length of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters and a width of around 0.2 centimeters in a linear-quadrangular shape and have a diamond-shaped cross-section. Its tip is pointed. There are four to seven stomatal lines on each side of the needle .

Picea neoveitchii is single-sexed ( monoecious ) and the flowering time is in May. The cones are elongated to ovoid-cylindrical in shape with a length of 8 to 14 centimeters and a thickness of 5 to 6.5 centimeters. They are initially green and, when they are ripe, turn light brown to brown, rarely yellow-green, from September to October. The seed scales are diamond to egg-shaped and about 2.7 inches long and 2.7 to 3 inches wide. Their margins are serrated or almost entire. The obovate seeds are 5 to 6 millimeters long and around 3.5 millimeters wide. They have a wing that is about 10 millimeters long and oval in shape.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Picea neoveitchii is in China and consists of several geographically separated occurrences. It includes Wutai Shan in northeastern Shanxi , southern Gansu , Neixiang County in southwestern Henan , western Hubei and southern Shaanxi, and Sichuan .

Picea neoveitchii thrives at altitudes of 1300 to 2000 meters. On the southern slopes of the Qin Ling , it grows mainly in montane coniferous forests. It also grows in river valleys or on rubble heaps .

Picea neoveitchii is classified as "Endangered" in the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary. The destruction of the habitat caused by logging is named as the main endangerment factor.

use

The wood from Picea neoveitchii is used as construction wood , in furniture construction as well as for the production of masts and cellulose .

Systematics

Picea neoveitchii is assigned to the subgenus Picea , the section Picea , the subsection Picea and the series Asperatae within the genus of the spruce trees ( Picea ) .
