George Ramsay, 12th Earl of Dalhousie

George Ramsay, 12th Earl of Dalhousie , CB ( April 26, 1806 - July 20, 1880 at Dalhousie Castle ) was a Scottish - British nobleman and naval officer.

Life

Ramsay was born on April 26, 1806, the son of the Hon. John Ramsay (1775-1842) and his wife Mary Delise. His father was a Lieutenant-General in the British Army and the fourth son of George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie . He had six siblings, five brothers and a sister. On August 12, 1845 he married Sarah Frances Robertson († 1904) with whom he had four sons.

Ramsay served as an officer in the Royal Navy from 1820 . In 1856 he was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath and in 1857 took over the post of Commander of the Pembroke Dockyard . In 1862 Ramsay was promoted to Rear Admiral. Between 1866 and 1869 he headed an important part of the British Navy with the South America Station and achieved the rank of Vice Admiral there . When his cousin Fox Maule-Ramsay, 11th Earl of Dalhousie , died childless on July 6, 1874, he inherited his Scottish nobility titles as 12th Earl of Dalhousie , 12th Lord Ramsay of Keringtoun and 13th Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie . On June 12, 1875, he was also awarded the title of Baron Ramsay , of Glenmark in the County of Forfar, by Queen Victoria . The latter title, which belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom , gave him an automatic seat in the House of Lords . He retired that same year and was promoted to admiral on August 5, 1875 . Upon his death, his titles passed to his eldest son, John William .
