Pierre-Joseph van Beneden (born December 19, 1809 in Mechelen , † January 8, 1894 in Leuven / Belgium ) was a Flemish- Belgian parasitologist and paleontologist who is best known as a helminthologist for his research on tapeworms (Cestoda).

Life

Van Beneden initially trained with the pharmacist Louis Stoffels in Mechelen , where he got to know his collection of fossils , minerals and animal preparations . He studied medicine in Leuven until 1831 and comparative anatomy in Ghent and further specialized in zoology at the Natural History Museum in Paris. From 1835 he was curator of the Natural History Museum in Leuven and in 1836 he was appointed professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the Catholic University of Leuven . He dealt intensively with questions of parasitology and coined the term commensalism . In 1843 van Beneden set up the world's first marine research station in Ostend at his own expense, the “laboratoire des Dunes”, which became a magnet for Belgian, German and French marine biologists and a prototype of similar research facilities in the European coastal states and the USA. From 1859 he turned to the research of whales and wrote the standard work Ostéographie des cétacés vivants et fossiles (1869) with Paul Gervais .

In 1859 he became a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW) and in 1869 a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg . Since 1866 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences and a foreign member since 1894 . In 1875 he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Society and in 1884 an honorary member ( Honoray Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1886 van Beneden was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Van Beneden was a member of the Linnaeus Society . When La Société Cuvierienne was founded in 1838 , he was one of the 140 founding members of the society. His son was the biologist Édouard van Beneden .
