Pierre Bouquin (* early 16th century in western France, † 1582 in Lausanne ) was a French Reformed theologian .

Life

Pierre Bouquin was probably born in western France between 1510 and 1515. In 1539 the University of Bourges awarded him a theological doctorate after studying there . Shortly afterwards he became a monk , then prior of the Carmelite order , but left the Order in 1541 because he turned to the Reformation and fled via Basel and Leipzig to Wittenberg ; in September 1542 he was appointed to the University of Strasbourg . Towards the end of the year, however, he moved back to Bourges to teach at the university there.

Bouquin also became cathedral preacher there , but shortly afterwards this office was withdrawn from him because of his evangelical sentiments. Because of this, he was charged before the Archbishop of Paris, but escaped the whole thing when he fled to Strasbourg in 1555. There he was employed in 1555 for two years as a preacher in a French community.

He was appointed professor of theology at Heidelberg University in 1558; he had been in town since the previous year. He became dean of the theological faculty and church council member in 1560; it appointed him Elector Friedrich III. , precisely because of Bouquin's Reformation sentiments. With Caspar Olevian and Zacharias Ursinus he published the Heidelberg Catechism . In June 1560 he took part in a disputation with Lutherans on the subject of the Lord's Supper ; he also took part in the Maulbronn Religious Discussion in April 1564.

When Friedrich III. died on October 26, 1576, his son Ludwig VI. his successor and tried to re-enforce Lutheranism against the Reformed Church in the Palatinate. To this end, he disempowered reformed university teachers and preachers; thus Bouquin lost his office. Therefore, he went to Lausanne to attend the local university to become a professor in 1578 and preacher in the year. He passed away four years later.
