Pierre Meyer

Pierre Meyer (* 1900 in Bouxwiller , Alsace ; † November 1, 1964 in Strasbourg , Alsace) was a French forester . From 1950 until his death as Conservateur des Eaux et Forêts, he was head of the forest administration in the Bas-Rhin department and, not least, distinguished himself through his commitment to German-French friendship .

Life

Born in Alsace, Pierre Meyer attended the Institut Agronomique as part of his forestry training and then the Nancy Forestry School , where he graduated in 1927. He then worked as a Guard Général in Sélestat before he was employed as an inspector in La Petite-Pierre , Haguenau and finally again in Sélestat. During World War II he served in Laon , capital of the Aisne department .

After the war he was appointed head of the French forest administration in Freiburg im Breisgau . He held this post until 1950, when he was appointed Conservateur des Eaux et Forêts des Départements Bas-Rhin in Strasbourg and was thus head of the forest administration in Lower Alsace until his death.

Conservateur Pierre Meyer died on November 1, 1964 in Strasbourg.

Services

Conservateur Meyer during his tenure, especially silviculture , forest management and expansion of the forest road network promoted in Bas-Rhin department. He was particularly concerned with questions relating to forest work . For example, he founded a school for forest workers in Saverne and also generally participated in the training of young foresters.

Meyer earned special services through his commitment to the German-French friendship in the forestry field. He made numerous friends in Germany and was well known in forestry circles there. He had a long-standing friendship with Max Maier, the former forest president of Baden-Württemberg. He also took numerous domestic and foreign guests on excursions through the Alsatian forest areas.

Meyer also edited the French-language part of the forestry dictionary published by Johannes Weck in 1966 , which contained forestry terms in German , English , French , Spanish and Russian .

Honors

For his services he received high awards from the French state. He was Officier du Mérite Agricole and Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur .
