Erhart Falckener

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erhart Falckener also Erhart Valckener , Erhard Falkner and Erhard Falkener was a Bavarian master of carpentry and flat-cut technology , who built late-Gothic church furniture at the end of the 15th century and beginning of the 16th century, on the Middle Rhine , in the Rheingau and in today's Rheinhessen .

Life

From three factory signatures that have been preserved on the church stalls he made , it is known that Falckener came from Abensberg in Bavaria and temporarily lived in Gau-Odernheim (Rhineland-Palatinate). There are no other reliable sources about its origin. Falckener brought back techniques from his homeland that led to the formation of an enclave of late Gothic church furniture with southern German and Alpine characteristics on the central Rhine. The end of his workshop is estimated at around 1524.

Falckener's signed works can be found in Bechtolsheim, Weinheim and Kiedrich:

  • Lay stalls in the Simultankirche St. Maria and St. Christophorus in Bechtolsheim from 1496. Thanks to a restoration between 1974 and 1976, the entire original paintwork of the stalls was exposed and restored - a remarkable rarity.
  • Rest of lay chairs in the St. Gallus Church in Weinheim , also from 1496.
  • Lay stalls in the parish church of St. Valentinus in Kiedrich from 1510. Similar to the first mentioned work, this is the rare case of a completely preserved late Gothic parish chair . Falckener's spiral of justice is best known .

Hildegard Sobel (see bibliography) assigns the following additional works to the master Erhart Falckener on the basis of extensive architectural and style comparisons (chronological order):

According to the same study, the following works can be assigned to the Falckener successor:

  • St. Margaretha in Oberheimbach : Pulpit (1517)
  • Assumption of the Virgin in Niederheimbach : vestry cabinet (1518)
  • Evangelical mountain church (St. Pankratius) in Udenheim : lordship stalls, rest of lay stalls (around 1518)
  • Evangelical parish church (St. Oswald) in Manubach : lay chairs, lost gallery balustrade (1524)

Art-historical classification

The furniture construction technique Falckener corresponds to the late Gothic building program of the time and the state of the art documented by other traditional choir stalls and secular furniture (seats, cupboards and chests) in the southern German-speaking area. What is remarkable, however, is the wide range of design techniques, shapes and materials used by his workshop. His flat-cut work is relatively roughly carved and richly colored, while his tracery , on the other hand - as is common in southern Germany and the Alpine region - is very delicate. Falckener often places finely carved tracery on the flat-cut surfaces of his church furniture. His plant ornaments show a change from the traditional stylized acanthus and thistle motifs to naturalistic representations of plants such as vines, hops, honeysuckle, guns, etc. In addition, Falckener is characterized by the frequent and diverse use of texts. He uses content from popular religious literature from the pre-Reformation period. His favorite fonts are Gothic minuscule and Antiqua - capitals . With the Reformation and the beginning of the Renaissance , the late Gothic art of the Falckener school went out of fashion.
