Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP ( Pillsbury for short ) is a US commercial law firm . Pillsbury advises and represents national and multinational corporations, financial institutions and governments.

history

The firm was founded in 1868 under the name Pillsbury Madison by Evans Searle Pillsbury in New York City. The San Francisco office was opened in 1874 . Even in the early years, large companies such as Wells Fargo were among the firm's clients. In 1883, the company continued to grow with the merger of numerous lawyers from San Francisco. In the late 19th century, the firm represented numerous oil companies, including the Pacific Coast Oil Company , a forerunner of the Chevron Corporation . The specialization in this branch of industry continued well into the 20th century. As early as 1901, the first branch abroad was opened with an office in the Philippines , but it was closed again in 1905. The firm's office was completely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco . As a result of the quake, the law firm's lawyers represented numerous victims in proceedings against their insurance companies. From around 1930 the company experienced a strong growth spurt. While 26 lawyers still worked for the company in 1931, their number rose to 40 by the beginning of World War II . With the entry of the United States into the war, the number of lawyers fell sharply. Due to the good connections to the American government, the company was able to continue to operate profitably. After the end of the Second World War, the lawyers concentrated mainly on mandates in the construction industry. From 1952 onwards, the law firm dealt with all legal questions in connection with the financing of the construction of the Stonestown Shopping Center , at that time the largest shopping center in the San Francisco Bay Area . In addition to construction companies, leading companies from other sectors were also among the firm's clients. From 1960 onwards, the Ford Motor Company's legal interests were safeguarded . In 1980 the firm participated in the initial public offering of Genentech , one of the first biotechnology companies. From 1990 onwards, Pillsbury's economic situation deteriorated noticeably as more and more companies set up their own legal department and no longer needed the services of the firm. In order to be able to continue to work economically, the law firm joined forces in 1990 with Lillick & McHose from Los Angeles . With the newly arrived lawyers, Pillsbury concentrated on advising companies in the telecommunications industry in the 1990s . In 1996, the next merger followed with Cushman Darby & Cushman , a law firm specializing in intellectual property law . In 1997, for cost reasons, the offices in the greater San Francisco area were merged into one large headquarters in the 50 Fremont Center . After another merger took place in 2005, this time with Shaw Pitman , a large New York law firm specializing in IT law , more than 100 lawyers left the company in early 2006. As part of the bankruptcy proceedings of the chip manufacturer SonicBlue , Pillsbury came into the focus of the judiciary. The attorneys were alleged to have failed to disclose a conflict of interest . In the process that followed, the firm agreed to pay the company $ 10 million. In 2012, the company started talks on the merger with the Washington law firm Dickstein Shapiro . However, these discussions ended in early 2013 with no results.
