The Pirin Mountains ( Bulgarian Пирин , Greek Πιρίν , ancient name Orbelos ) are high mountains with a strong Alpine character in southwestern Bulgaria ( Blagoevgrad province ) on the border with the Macedonia region in northeastern Greece . Depending on the demarcation, the Pirin Mountains are in or on the eastern edge of the historical-geographical landscape of Macedonia .

It stretches for about 40 km from northwest to southeast. Its west-east extension is around 25 km. The highest peak is the Wichren at 2914  m . The mountains are also Bulgaria's largest national park and cover an area of ​​264.9 km². The Pirin National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 . The name of the mountain is derived from Perun , the supreme god of Slavic mythology .

Originated in the context of the Alpine mountain formation in Europe in the geological epoch of the Neogene ( Pliocene / Miocene ), its northern part essentially consists of raised metamorphic rocks such as crystalline limestone and marble . The conical and pyramidal peaks of the Wichren and Kutelo are particularly distinctive .

Lakes

At the beginning of the summer there are 176 glacial funnel lakes. Sometimes there are trout in it. The highest lake is the Gornoto Poleshansko Esero at 2715 m, near the Poleshans.

Over 60 percent of the Pirin Mountains are covered with forests, which can be divided into three levels of altitude:

  • Up to 1400 m altitude: mixed beech and fir forest,
  • 1400 to 1800 m: fir and spruce forest,
  • up to 2200 m: pines, spruces, pines.

In addition to 500-year-old black pines, the Pirin also has Bulgaria's oldest tree, the Bajkuschewa armored pine , which is estimated to be around 1,300 years old . A fifth of the plants on the Red List of Endangered Species in Bulgaria can be found here.

Larger towns

At the foot of the Pirin Mountains in the north are the winter sports and mountain health resort of Bansko with its alpine skiing area "Schiligarnika", the town of Raslog and the village of Dobrinishte , in the southwest near the Greek border the health resort of Sandanski (warmest and sunniest town in Bulgaria with 25,000 inhabitants) , between the Pirin Mountains and the Rhodope Mountains, the town of Goze Deltschew and in the south the wine-growing town and center of the Bulgarian national revival as well as the smallest town in Bulgaria, Melnik , and the village of Pirin.
