The Piz Fess is the highest peak in the Signina group in the Adula Alps in Switzerland and stands at the southern end of a plateau , the snow floor . This is limited to the east by the Oberhorn ( 2796 m ) and to the north by the Piz Riein ( 2752 m ). On Piz Fess, walls drop steeply into Safiental , steep scree slopes towards Riein .
The inaccessible main summit has a summit cross . In the further course of the ridge to the south follows the Piz Signina , which gives the group its name , but which is around thirty meters lower than the Piz Fess.
The name is derived from the Romansh fess (split), which in turn refers to the Latin participle fissus from findere (split).
Access
Piz Fess can be reached from Tenna via the Tällihütte (2186 m). Hikers can tap fresh water right in front of the hut. From there further southwest in the direction of Schafälpli and up to the snow bottom. There is the possibility of short climbs to the Oberhorn (2796 meters) and the Piz Riein and even to the Piz Fess, all on a clear path. Attentive observers can come across a pair of ptarmigan by surprise.
On the way back it is worthwhile to walk down along the mountain edge with views down into the Safiental towards Neukirch and across. lying on the Alp Bischola on the Heinzenberg.
