The Plain Moor is a football stadium in the English town of Torquay the county Devon . The venue in the southwestern part of England is the sporting home of the Torquay United football club (nickname: The Gulls , German Die Möwen ) and bears the name of the Plainmoor district. The venue stands in the middle of residential buildings and has four roofed stands with 6,104 seats; the main stand being closed to the public. The venue has been sponsored by the Launa Windows Stadium since September 2014 . The contract has a term of four years.

history

The exact year of the stadium opening is unknown, but rugby matches were played on Plainmoor as early as 1881 . Until 1904, the Torquay Athletic Rugby Football Club was located in the Plainmoor and left the facility in the direction of the Recreation Ground of Torquay. The football club FC Ellacombe followed as the home team. Six years later Ellacombe and Torquay United merged to form Torquay Town. Today's main user Torquay United moved into Plainmoor after the merger of Torquay Town and FC Babbacombe in 1921. Six years later, the Gulls were included for Aberdare Athletic from Wales in the Football League Third Division South . For the first season we bought a wooden grandstand from 150 £ Racecourse Buckfastleigh Racecourse. An identical tier can still be seen today in the sports facility in Buckfastleigh, which was closed in 1960 . The first game of Torquay United of the Football League Third Division South on Plainmoor took place on August 27, 1927. The 11,625 spectators saw a 1-1 draw against Exeter City . Three years after the purchase, a storm destroyed the roof of the main stand.

Over the next 50 years or so, the Gulls' venue fell into a structural slumber ; so that there were only small changes in the plain moor. In the early 1950s, the standing rank Popular Terrace on the back straight was partially roofed. On November 22, 1954, the first game under floodlights , against Birmingham City , could be celebrated. The under-designed lighting system was replaced in December 1960 by a more powerful system for £ 9,000. The visitor record, which is still valid today, was also set in the mid-1950s. The FA Cup game of the 4th round on January 29, 1955 against Huddersfield Town (0: 1) saw 21,908 spectators. In the 1960s, a small concrete stand called the Mini Stand added to the stadium. Rank should also be reconsidered; but there was no money for that. At that time, around 22,000 fans found space in the facility.

Six days after the devastating Valley Parade fire disaster on May 11, 1985 at Bradford City Stadium and just hours after a safety inspection on the Plainmoor, a fire broke out in the old main stand of the Gulls . A third of the tier was destroyed in the nightly fire; this part was demolished and the other part closed. Nobody was injured in the fire. The club offices and changing rooms would have to be moved to container buildings . After the reopening, only 4,999 places remained in the home of the 22,000. That number below 5,000 was set; so as not to fall under the jurisdiction of the 1975 Safety of Sports Grounds Act . For this certificate, the stadium would have had to be retrofitted structurally and in terms of security. After the Bradford fire, the limit should be lowered to 5,000 places. The lower limit remained at 10,000 places. In November 1986, personalized tickets were introduced in the Plainmoor; after Wolverhampton Wanderers fans rioted through Torquay. In addition, the visiting fans from Luton Town and Colchester United were not allowed into the stadium for one and a half seasons.

From 1992 to 2000, the opposite stands and the stands behind the gate were replaced by new buildings. In 1992, the old mini stand made space for the 1,275-seat family stand behind the gate in the southwest. The rank houses the club offices, a meeting room, the fan shop as well as the Boots and Laces restaurant , a pub and the 200 Club Bar . The old Cowshed on the back straight gave way to the Popular Stand with 2,300 standing places in 1994 . At the beginning of the 2000/01 season, the new Sparkworld stand was also ready for use. In August 2010 the association presented the first plans for the construction of a new main stand; which should increase the total capacity to 6,196 places. The modern new building for £ 2 million with 1,750 seats will not be built before 2012. The equipment of the range includes a. Changing rooms, a press stand and seats for disabled spectators. The main stand will be named Bristow's Bench ; after former Vice President Paul Bristow. He supported the association financially; which gave him a £ 15 million lottery win. Bristow died of a heart attack in late June 2010 at the age of 59 .

In July 2018, Torquay United announced the construction of a new 10,000-seat stadium. The budget currently stands at 30 to 40 million  £ (about 34 to 45 million  ). The planning is in the initial phase. The new venue is to be financed privately. The club chairman Osborne Clarke with his company Gaming International will be the largest donor.

From the 2018/19 season, the Truro City football club , also in the National League South , will use the Plainmoor for its home games.
