Planet Carlos is a German drama directed by Andreas Kannengießer from 2008 .
action
Carlos, 13 years old, lives in the Barrio, a hut settlement on the outskirts of Léon, Nicaragua's second largest city. He earns his living in a Gigantona group that performs in front of tourists. In such traditional groups, dance, drama and verse are performed by children. The two-meter-tall Gigantona doll is danced around by Enano, a small man with a large head, accompanied by wild drum rolls. Carlos dances the Enano, the older Isabel sets the rhythm. Carlos, however, has had enough of the sweaty hopping around, he would much rather be the loser. So it comes to an argument and Carlos is thrown from the group. The only thing he can save is Enano's damaged costume head. When his mother found out about his eviction, she sent Carlos to the market without further ado to earn money as a banana carrier.
Against all odds, Carlos succeeds in founding his own Gigantona group, in which he is the verse. Friends from the market join in, and Isabel also joins the group. Together they repair the broken Enano head and build improvised props. The tough everyday life of young people leaves little time for art. Carlos is not satisfied with the results. In order to secure the existence of his Gigantona group, he tries to get a foreign scholarship from an old poet. His boundless optimism is put to the test when it becomes clear that no scholarship is expected. His colleagues then let him down. It's over with the Gigantona group. In his disappointment, Carlos fled to a beach with Isabel, his little sister Kenya and her chicken. There he is faced with the greatest challenge of his life - responsibility.
production
The film was made as a collaboration between eight students from the Konrad Wolf Academy of Film and Television, directed by Andreas Kannengießer . The production was supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and was originally planned as a documentary about street children . The script for the film was created on site and draws on stories and experiences that the filmmakers have gathered in film workshops with children and young people. Part of the concept was that all German team members had to learn Spanish so that there was no need for an interpreter during filming. All actors are amateur actors and come from León , the second largest city in Nicaragua , with the exception of the main actor . Mario José Chavez Chavez, who plays Carlos, comes from Granada and was part of a traditional giants group in real life at the time of shooting. The film was shot on MiniDV and in the original locations.
Planet Carlos premiered in competition at the 2008 Tokyo International Film Festival . The German premiere took place at the Hamburg Film Festival in 2008. The film may not be commercially exploited due to unresolved music rights, but it can be obtained from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development from the regional / district / city image offices and media centers for educational purposes.
criticism
“An extraordinary film with a performance of a young boy, you will never forget. I love it. See it. "
“Just by watching this film, through the story, I could learn about a poor village in Nicaragua. Please see this boy grow in this film. The acting of this boy, for me is a miracle. "
"Among the best were Planet Carlos, the debut film by German filmmaker Andreas Kannengießer about a dirt poor Nicaraguan teenager trying to make a go of life in gigantona, a sort of street poetry / dance / performance art."
