Planomicrobium alkanoclasticum is a type of bacteria . The species is one of the firmicutes .
features
Appearance
The cells are rod-shaped. Spores are not formed. The size is 0.4-0.8 μm in width and 1.7-2.6 μm in length. The bacterium is one of the gram-positive bacteria (strain Firmicutes), but the Gram stain can also vary.
Growth and metabolism
The species is strictly aerobic , so it depends on oxygen. Growth appears at temperatures of 15–41 ° C and at sodium chloride values of 0.8–6%. Nitrate is not reduced. Planomicrobium alkanoclasticum is chemoorganotroph . Metabolism is aerobic breathing . The bacterium can hydrolytically break down gelatin . Also, strength is used.
Chemotaxonomic Features
The predominantly present menaquinones are MK-7 and MK-8. The GC content in the DNA is 45.3 mol percent.
Systematics
Planomicrobium alkanoclasticum belongs to the Planococcaceae family . The bacterium was first described as Planococcus alkanoclasticus in 2001. Due to further investigations, the species was then transferred together with Planococcus psychrophilus to the genus Planomicrobium .
ecology
The bacterium was isolated from a stream in England that was contaminated with crude oil . Due to its ability to break down a variety of linear and branched alkanes with up to 33 carbon atoms, Planomicrobium alkanoclasticum is of interest for cleaning contaminated soils.
etymology
The generic name is made up of the Greek words planos ("wanderer") and micros ("small") and refers to the size (either cocci or short rods) and the property of the motility of these bacteria. The species name P. alkanoclasticum , taken from Latin, indicates the ability to divide alkanes , "Alkanum" is Latin and means alkane, clasticum is derived from the Greek word clasto and means "broken".
