Podoctidae are a family of harvestmen (Opiliones) of the arachnids (Arachnida).

anatomy

Podoctidae are mostly medium-sized harvestmen with a body length of 2.5 to 5 millimeters. The legs are between 3 and 30 millimeters long. Most of the species are yellowish or brownish, but some are also green. The legs of some species are ringed yellow-black. Many have a thorn on their front body. The eyes are not always clustered on a hill. Some species are very prickly. The penes are hidden in a trunk characteristic of the family, in which the glans is protected.

distribution

Most species are found in Southeast Asia and on the islands in the western Pacific; many species have been found in New Guinea. The family is also found on islands in the Indian Ocean and central Africa. Although it is absent in America, one species also occurs in Cuba : This species was probably introduced from Asia and only lives there in a botanical garden.

Systematics

The following system can only be considered provisional, since many genera will probably turn out to be untenable and they will have to be divided into further families.
