Pohnsdorf stowage
The Pohnsdorfer Stauung is a 100 hectare wetland located in the municipality of Pohnsdorf in the Plön district . It is in the conservation area no. 19 post see-Neuwührener Au Klosterforst Preetz and the surrounding area .
Emergence
After the Vistula ice age, a lake developed from a dead ice hole near today's Preetz . This gradually silted up, forming up to 12 m thick deposits of low peat and mud . At the beginning of the 1950s, the area was overgrown by broken forest , willow bushes , reeds and sedge .
drainage
From 1951 an attempt was made to make the area agriculturally usable under the direction of the Bremen bog research station . First, the swamp forests were cut down; then the water level was lowered through drainage measures , ditches and a pumping station . Because of the drainage measures, the low-moor peat decomposed and compacted, so that the terrain sagged by an average of one meter. As a result, despite the drainage, the area was practically unusable for arable farming and served as a pasture for cattle . The species-rich flora and fauna of the previous wetland disappeared.
Rewetting
The use of the area became more and more difficult because it continued to sag. As a result, it no longer had any value for agriculture. Between 1991 and 1993, the Kurt and Erika Schrobach Foundation acquired the site and began to raise the water level again in order to create a wet biotope. In 2002 the rewetting was completed. Moisture-loving animals and plants settled again very quickly.
meaning
The Pohnsdorf damming is now an important breeding and resting place for numerous species of birds such as crane , teal , little grebe and potted marsh grouse, as well as an important spawning water for amphibians such as common toad , tree frog and moor frog . That is why it is popular with nature lovers as an excursion destination. A spacious observation hut with information about the flora and fauna found there was built for them.
The water can be easily reached by bike from Kiel and Preetz . It is on the Schusteracht hiking trail .
