The Poplar River is a tributary of Lake Superior in the US state of Minnesota .

The Poplar River has its origin northeast of Lake Superior in Fleck Lake . This is fed by the adjoining lake Crescent Lake to the north . The Poplar River flows in a predominantly southerly direction through the Canadian Shield in the southwestern part of Cook County and flows into Lake Superior 2.5 km west of Lutsen. The Poplar River has a length of 34.9 km. Its catchment area covers 295.3 km².

The river name ( poplar English for poplar ) is derived from the translation of the Ojibwe name of the river.
