Porn is the debut album of the Austrian techno - producer Patrick Pulsinger . It was published in 1994 on Peter Wachas record label Disko B . A re-release of the album was released in 2004.

The album is now considered a genre classic, especially in the Austrian techno scene.

Emergence

Pulsinger knew the German DJ Hell from their time together in New York City. Through him the contact with Wacha's label Disko B came about. After the EPs Dogmatic Sequences and Dogmatic Sequences II were first released there, Pulsinger's debut album Porno followed .

The eight pieces on the album are mainly based on minimalist techno rhythms, but also pick up on jazz and trip-hop sounds. Pulsinger produced all pieces together with his Cheap label colleague Erdem Tunakan and the musician Gerhard Potuznik .

Pulsinger's choice for the title of the album was controversial on the scene and sparked a brief controversy.

Cover design

The record cover of the first published double vinyl version clearly cites the so-called gun barrel sequence from the opening sequence of the James Bond films and shows Pulsinger with a pistol. In the center of the picture are the words Porno and Patrick Pulsinger , both in blue font.

The CD version published in mid-1995 essentially retains the motif. In addition, pictures of half-naked women have been added to the sides of the cover. The inlay of the CD packaging was created by Abuse Industries and shows the fictional story of pimp Patrick "007" Pulsinger in the form of a photo novel.

reception

When it was released in 1994, the album received a good rating from the German techno magazine Frontpage . The critic Riley Reinhold awarded the high rating of six stars and ruled:

“Musically, his record is ... cool and ties in with the last IO with Erdem Tunakan. "Reflections" z. B. is a jazz track that could have been found on Mo Wax and, in terms of style, maybe its secret predilection for the future? In addition to his oval ambient track "District", there are indescribably many other Detroit- inspired pieces on the record, of which "A Piece of Me" and "Treated" are perhaps the pieces for the dance floor in general. "

- Frontpage

Intro magazine also rated the album positively:

"..." Porno "is pumping background music for a sci-fi porn whose 'dirty' story is, by the way, richly illustrated in the CD inlay. The soundtrack contains dull, subtle melodies that indulge in intercourse with experimental, intelligent techno visions. This crossover aspect is welcome in order to achieve a new standard of expression, beyond all common categories. Eight groovy little fuckers, which in 45 min. reveal the essence of his musical and psychedelic experiences. "

- intro

In retrospect, the critic John Bush gave four out of five stars on the music website Allmusic and assessed the record as "surprisingly straightforward". He called the pieces "precise laboratory pieces" and emphasized the occasional echo- dub effects (cf. dub-techno )

On the occasion of the Pulsinger album Impassive Skies , published in 2010, the Viennese newspaper Der Standard interviewed Pulsinger and called porn in this context "one of the central techno statements of all".
