The portal at Martinikirche 1 in Braunschweig is a portal from the Renaissance period and was created around 1600 by an unknown artist.

history

The original location of the portal was only a few meters away from the current one in the house at An der Martinikirche 5 , corner of Sonnenstrasse , across from the west side of the Martinikirche . When the building was demolished in 1888, the portal was moved to its present location, opposite the north side of the church, where it was largely undamaged by the Second World War and is now part of an administrative building that was rebuilt in 1957 right next to the old town hall .

description

Presentation and execution

The portal is built on two floors. The pillars on the right and left show herms at the base , above there are erect lions that look directly at the viewer. At their side hovers a woman with a laurel wreath in one hand and a palm branch in the other . The architrave above, richly decorated with ornaments , finally forms the base for two large, elegantly dressed male figures, which stand at the outer corners and armed with lances . The clothing in the style of the time is reproduced in great detail.

material

The portal is made entirely of Elm limestone . This type of rock comes from the Elm , a mountain range just a few kilometers east of Braunschweig. Due to its very good weather resistance , it was mainly used in the Middle Ages and the early modern period for many buildings in the city and country of Braunschweig . In addition, the stone is very suitable for sculptural work.

colourfulness

Investigations in the course of the restoration in 1989/90 showed that the quality and preservation of the rock was good due to the setting of the entire portal. The colors consisted of a lime casein- oil mixture, which has proven to be particularly suitable for this material. In order to prevent the Elm limestone from soaking up the paint or moisture and at the same time to increase the luminosity of the paint, a double primer of plant black , ocher and calcite was applied. Then earth colors such as red and yellow ocher, terra di siena and caput mortuum were used. These then cheap color pigments were finally followed by more expensive ones such as malachite for green, azurite for blue, mountain cinnabar for red and gold leaf for glossy effects. The overall impression of the frame is balanced.

restoration

Between 1989 and 1990 the portal was subjected to fundamental examinations (samples were also taken) and then restored to its original colors.
