Postal agencies were set up at the Deutsche Reichspost in 1871, in Württemberg in 1876 and in Bavaria in 1898. Since the beginning of 1923, a distinction has been made between “Post agencies with full operation” and “Post agencies with simple operation (meB)”. The postal agencies were post offices with little traffic, which were not administered by civil servants, but by private individuals (farmers, traders, teachers, estate secretaries, etc.) on a part-time basis. They primarily served the transport needs of the population in the countryside, there were only a few postal agencies in the cities. As branch post offices, the postal agencies were subordinate to an accounting post office for administrative, personnel, operational and cash matters. In the area of the Bavarian Post there were post agencies that were not directly subordinate to any accounting post office, but to the Oberpostdirektion ("subordinate post agencies"), furthermore post agencies united with railroad offices, where the railway staff provided the postal service with "post agencies with simple operation" had no specific ones Service hours and no delivery district.

The postal agencies were divided into seven groups in 1920. In special cases, a lump sum was granted instead of the group remuneration. The administrators of “postal agencies with simple operations” received a lump sum that was measured at around a quarter of the initial remuneration of Group VII. The postal agents in pay groups I to III received an allowance in addition to their remuneration if they performed the service themselves and demonstrated that their income from other activities did not exceed 40 percent of the postal agent's remuneration. When hired, the postal agents had to prove the necessary personal aptitude and be in a secure financial position; they were trained on the spot for several weeks by specialist officials for their service. The annual remuneration (without any allowances) of the postal agents was:

  • 1871: 0450 marks
  • 1900: 0750 marks (equivalent to a current purchasing power of 5,211.7 euros)
  • 1908: 0900 marks (5,421.43 euros)
  • 1920: 2,040–6900 marks (955.86 to 3,233.06 euros)
  • 1924: 0210–636 gold marks (January 1) (870.89 to 2,637.54 euros)
  • 1927: 0567–1662 Reichsmarks (2,079.59 to 6,095.73 euros)

The number of postal agencies was

  • Reich Post and Telegraph Administration:
    • 1871: 00567
    • 1875: 02.266
    • 1885: 05.047
    • 1895: 07,878
    • 1900: 09.046
    • 1905: 09.671
    • 1914: 10.559
  • German Reichspost:
    • 1920: 12.157
    • 1923: 10.494
    • 1926: 10.858
    • 1929: 11.157
    • 1939: 12.484

On April 1, 1939, the postal agencies were given the designation " Poststelle ", the postal agents the official designation " Posthalter ".

The post offices in the German colonies were also generally referred to as post agencies.

Deutsche Post AG (from 1995)

In the course of the postal reform in the mid-1990s, a wave of post offices closed . Since then, so-called post offices have existed in retail . The owner of his business concludes a partner contract and receives, in addition to a certain basic remuneration (of less than 1000 EUR for single postal agencies), various commissions that make up both the actual turnover and profit / loss.

In addition to traditional postal products, other items are also sold in postal agencies. There are postal agencies in grocery stores , magazine kiosks , stationery stores , Toto - Lotto - acceptance points , but also in gas stations . At the beginning of 2003, Quelle submitted an offer from Deutsche Post to its shop operators to also offer postal services in their stores. Post-service shops should offer a postal "basic range" aimed primarily at private customers , dispensing with less popular but complex services such as registered mail , parcel acceptance or cash on delivery . Unlike full-fledged postal agencies, points of sale are also intended for towns with less than 2000 inhabitants. B. also occur in underserved districts of large cities.

Since around 2006/2007, Deutsche Post has also introduced a very simplified form of post called points of sale . Supermarkets or other shops get a basic range of postage stamps and parcel stamps, which are only available shrink-wrapped, and they should also accept prepaid letters and parcels; individual stamps are not available here. The points of sale have been known as DHL parcel shops since the end of 2013 .

Since Postbank was sold to Deutsche Bank in 2010, the Postbank branches can also be described as postal agencies.

Swiss Post AG (from 2006)

The first agency of the Swiss Post opened in 2006 in Allenektiven . Swiss Post plans to close another 500 traditional branches by 2020 and replace them with agencies. These are often installed in Volg as well as Voi stores . Also Denner offers in each store to the agency services the post office. In April 2019, Swiss Post had over 1,000 agencies and in May 2019, 300 Migros branches were added to receive and send parcels. One of the most striking differences between these postal agencies and traditional post offices is that payment slips can only be paid for cashless ( PostFinance Card , Maestro and V-Pay card ).

Austrian Post AG

The Austrian Post has replaced since privatization in 2006 her own operated stores through mail-partner. Until recently in 2017, to 443 self-operated branches and 1,359 Post partners.
