Ministry of Post and Telecommunications
The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications ( Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications , MPT; . Engl own translation of . Jap 郵政省 Yusei shō , German Ministry of the postal system ' ) was, until 2001, a Ministry of the Japanese central government . It was responsible for the post office, insurance and financial services of the post office, from 1952 for the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) and after its privatization in 1985 for the supervision of the telecommunications sector.
The Ministry was created in 1949 as the successor to Teishin-shō ( 逓 信 省 , "Ministry of Communication"), which had been responsible for the post office, the telegraph system and the lighthouses since 1885 (at times also for railways). From 1943 to 1945 it was part of the Ministry of Transport and Communication ( 運輸 通信 省 , Un'yu-Tsūshin-shō ). From 1945 to 1952, in addition to the Ministry of Post, there was an independent Ministry of Telecommunications ( 電 気- 省 , Denkitsūshin-shō ).
When the central government was restructured on January 6, 2001, the Ministry of Post became part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications , the Sōmu-shō .
