Pottingeria acuminata is the only plant species of the monotypic genus Pottingeria fromthe spindle tree family (Celastraceae). The distribution area of this species extends from Assam to northwestern Thailand .

description

Pottingeria acuminata is an evergreen tree . Dried parts of the plant are light brown. The alternate and spirally arranged leaves have smooth leaf margins. The stipules are tiny.

The flowers are bundled together. The small, radial symmetry flowers have a double perianth . The sepals and petals are free. There is only one stamen circle ; the stamens are opposite the sepals, so the outer circle is missing. There is a large discus. Three carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown. A three-lobed scar stands on a short stylus; the scar flaps are relatively long and spreading.

A capsule fruit is formed.

Systematics

The genus Pottingeria was founded in 1898 by David Prain in J. Asiat. Soc. Bengal , Pt. 2, Nat. Hist. 67, p. 291 first published. Pottingeria acuminata was at times considered as a separate family Pottingeriaceae, but also as part of the Grossulariaceae or Escalloniaceae . The APG III understands it as part of the spindle tree family (Celastraceae).

The genus includes only one species, with two varieties:

  • Pottingeria acuminata Prain :
    • Pottingeria acuminata var. Acuminata
    • Pottingeria acuminata var. Latifolia Airy Shaw
