The Powder River is a 603-kilometer tributary of the Yellowstone River in southeastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming . He got the name Powder River because the sandbanks on the river resemble gunpowder.

The headwaters of the river are located in eastern Wyoming in the Bighorn Mountains . The Powder River arises at the confluence of the Middle Fork and North Fork Powder River near the village of Kaycee . After 603 kilometers it flows into the Yellowstone River.

In the basin of the river are the largest coal mine in the United States, the North Antelope Rochelle Complex and the older Black Thunder Mine . Together they provided 22% of total coal production in 2014.
