The President Schaefer is a former customs launch. The boat has been preserved in the museum harbor Oevelgönne and has been a listed building since May 2018 .
history
The boat was ordered in 1924, together with an identical sister ship, from the regional tax office to replace boats that were lost during the First World War . It was built in 1925 as the second boat at the Norderwerft .
The customs barge was initially used by various customs offices in the port of Hamburg for clearance. Later it was used primarily for inspection trips. In 1959 the boat was rebuilt and the drive modernized. A little later, the wooden deck superstructures with cabin and wheelhouse were removed and replaced with steel ones.
After the drive had been converted, the boat was used by the customs repair shop to supply floating customs services on pontoon systems and for inspection trips . After the customs repair shop was closed in late 1982, the boat was taken out of service. Initially it was planned to scrap the boat. In 1985, the Museum of Hamburg History added the boat to its collection of historical government vehicles. The berth of the boat was the museum harbor Oevelgönne in July 1985.
Due to the cancellation of considerable funding for the museum, the former customs launch had to be sold in 1995. It was able to be obtained from the museum harbor Oevelgönne through the purchase of a private person, but was subsequently sold several times. The boat was added to the list of movable monuments of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in May 2018 .
The boat is named after Bruno Louis Schaefer , former Senator and President of the Lower Elbe State Tax Office in Hamburg.
