Prelude is a coming-of-age film by Sabrina Sarabi that was released in German cinemas on August 29, 2019. The film sketches the career of the young concert pianist David, who upon his admission to the music conservatory realizes that his talent is not as extraordinary as he actually thought.

action

The young concert pianist David Berger was admitted to the Music Conservatory a long way from home. Hungry for life, he throws himself into the world of music, but quickly realizes that his gift is probably not as extraordinary as he actually thought. Soon he comes into conflict with his fellow student friend Walter. Prof. Matussek encourages and challenges David very much because a scholarship that would bring him to New York is in prospect. With the increasing pressure, he seems to be losing control of his life, but the self-confident vocal student Marie can help him not to break under the competitive pressure of the system. A series of decisive events finally throws David completely off track. Marie graduates, their relationship is losing tenderness; David's performance on the piano fluctuates more and more conspicuously, he is presented in public by Prof. Thibault; Walter seems to have got into his room and their conflict is escalating; David goes through severe crashes while partying. Ultimately, in the eyes of the disappointed Prof. Matussek, David is no longer an option as a scholarship holder. When he is released for the semester break and returns to his old surroundings, his life seems to be calm again. He hardly talks to his mother about his time at the conservatory and pretends to have to return there for a day before going out together. David finds accommodation with his childhood friend Stella, who has become a baby. When mother and child are out and about during the day, David hangs himself in the nursery.

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 12. In the statement of reasons for the release it is said that in the last third the atmosphere becomes increasingly oppressive, seems at times surreal and leads to suicide by the main character, which is only hinted at.

Reviews

Dieter Oßwald from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater writes that Louis Hofmann presents himself in the film in the minimalist less-is-more mode, and that he seems to effortlessly succeed in the mixture of vulnerability and coolness: “He comes across as shy and introverted, but at the same time he looks like one Volcano shortly before the eruption. "With Liv Lisa Fries , Hofmann has the perfect counterpart at his side, continues Oßwald:" As a singer she always sets the tone with confidence and mystery. "

Allan Hunter of Screen Daily thinks that Prelude is increasingly resembling the paranoia of a Polański classic from the 1960s or the intricate, poisoned relationships in some of the best work by Nicolas Roeg . The excellent mix of sounds uses the sound of an incessant ping-pong match, a dripping faucet and the tyranny of a metronome to convey what's going on in David's head, Hunter continued.

From the German Film and Media Review was prelude to the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states that on a staging level, the concept of telling stories with less dialogue and more with cinematic means is persuasive. For example, David's music, in the way it is staged, perfectly expresses all of the figure's emotions, and enormously strong assembly sequences of images and sounds are much better able to turn the inside of the figure out on film than any verbal explanation : “ Prélude makes a strong contribution to the state of our performance society , which not only, but above all, places enormous pressure on young people.
