Prelude FLNG is a floating facility for the production, liquefaction, storage and transhipment of natural gas from Royal Dutch Shell . It is the world's first implemented FLNG ( Floating Liquefied Natural Gas ) project and the largest floating offshore facility in the world. Completion was originally planned for 2015. The plant went into operation on December 25, 2018. One of the reasons for the delay is a fire.

An FLNG is comparable to a Floating Production Storage and Offloading Unit (FPSO) in oil production. The project, with which natural gas is to be extracted from the Prelude gas field found off Australia in 2007, was initially started exclusively by Shell, but has since become a consortium consisting of Shell (67.5%), INPEX (17.5%), Korea Gas Corporation (10%) and CPC Corporation (5%). The Prelude FLNG, which cost more than 12 billion US dollars , was commissioned in July 2009 from a construction consortium consisting of Samsung Heavy Industries and the French plant engineering company Technip . Construction began on October 18, 2012.

The double-hull structure Prelude FLNG is 488 meters long and 74 meters wide. 260,000 tons of steel are used for the construction. If the storage capacity with liquefied natural gas (LNG) is fully used , the plant will displace around 600,000 tons. The annual production capacity is estimated at 3.6 million tons of LNG, 1.3 million tons of condensate and 400,000 tons of LPG .

On December 3, 2013, the float took place at the Samsung shipyard in Geoje . On June 29, 2017, the ship left the shipyard for Australia.

Prelude FLNG will be used around 200 kilometers from the mainland and will require around 50 million liters (= 50,000 m 3 or around 50,000 t) of water per hour for the cooling or liquefaction process of the natural gas to −162 ° C (−260 ° F). The liquefied natural gas now only takes up 1/600 of the gas volume. The plant is expected to operate in the ocean gas fields for 20 to 25 years.
