action

Devdhar is an orphan and comes from a poor family. In order to start studying medicine in the city, he is financially supported by the wealthy priest Raja Thakur. Even so, he has a good relationship with the Thakurs, especially with his niece Manorama.

Eight years later he comes to visit the village. At the train station he immediately sees the now grown Manorama and falls in love with her, but never dares to confess his love and hopes that she too will fall in love with him.

However, his dreams burst when Rama receives a marriage proposal from the wealthy nobleman Narendra Pratap Singh. According to Hindu rituals, the horoscopes of the two are compared. So that the stars don't look bad for the couple, Rama's father, Virendra Singh, forces the astrologer Poojari to write a new horoscope for Manorama.

A lavish wedding is celebrated and Manorama moves into her husband's house. Four days after the wedding, Narendra had a car accident. Now the young Rama has to stick to the strict life of a widow. Unfortunately for her, she is raped by her brother-in-law, Raja Virendra Pratap Singh. She returns to her parents' house and only tells her mother about the terrible incident.

When Devdhar finds out about Manorama's new way of life on his next visit, he tries to put a smile on her face again. But for the villagers this behavior is not befitting a widow. Devdhar, on the other hand, considers this strict and ancient rule to be out of date. Therefore, he proposes to Manorama in public, even though he knows that a widow, unlike a widower, is not allowed to marry a second time.

This causes even more turmoil with Manorama's father, who wants to punish Devdhar for it. Raja Thakur asks Devdhar to flee with Manorama because his plan to take Rama as a wife is not accepted by society. Devdhar is not afraid and accepts the challenge. He skillfully brings the people on his side who oppose Virendra Singh's men. Ultimately, Devdhar reaches his destination and takes Rama as his wife. In doing so, he does away with the untimely traditions made by wealthy families to keep the common people to themselves and from which women suffer most.
