The tank locomotive of the Prussian State Railways , built in 1904 and designated as the T 16 , was a test locomotive for operation on inclined routes.

description

The locomotive with the road number Erfurt 1980 was developed by the Henschel company as a test locomotive for the inclines in Thuringia , which could pull trains weighing up to 200 tons at an incline of 10 per thousand at 75 km / h and on the flat at up to 90 km / h . It was one of the first tank locomotives with the 2'C2 ' wheel arrangement, which guaranteed stable running characteristics in both directions even at high speeds. In addition to the usual driver's cab, it had a front cab . Since the stoker was only with the driver in one direction of travel , a third man had to be deployed on the locomotive to monitor the route.

With an axle load of 20 tons, however, the machine was much too heavy for its time and could therefore hardly be used. The locomotive, which was around 20 years ahead of its time, was returned to the Henschel company after it had been used for some time and was scrapped by them. The state railroad only procured a practical successor eight years later with the T 18 class 2'C2 'tank locomotives .

The designation T 16 was given again to the completely differently constructed freight train tank locomotives with the E wheel arrangement.
