The Primo-Levi-Gymnasium is a state high school in the Berlin district of Weißensee . The school was created in the summer of 2007 by merging the former Wieland-Herzfelde-Oberschule and the Bühring-Oberschule, which has a history of more than 100 years. The two school buildings are approx. 300 meters apart.

The school is named after the Italian chemist, writer and philosopher Primo Levi . He was a resistance fighter against fascism during the German occupation of Italy in World War II and survived the Holocaust .

With around 1200 students, the Primo-Levi-Gymnasium is one of the largest schools in Berlin. In 2017, the Primo-Levi-Gymnasium was the high school with the most registrations for the seventh grade in all of Berlin.

School building and school history

The Primo Levi High School consists of two school buildings. The main building, called House A since the merger , in which the directorate is located, is the building of the former Wieland-Herzfelde-Oberschule on Pistoriusstraße . The second building, called House B , is the building of the former Bühring-Oberschule in the Woelckpromenade, which is located directly on the Kreuzpfuhl.

Former Wieland-Herzfelde School

The former Wieland-Herzfelde-Oberschule was built in 1926/1927 and in its history it has almost always been a double school. From 1940 to 1945 it was called the Clara Schumann School and honored the composer Clara Schumann ; after the Second World War , the building served as an epidemic station in 1946/1947, and from 1950 to 1957 it was an elementary school (graduation from 8th grade). From 1957 the school building was the seat of a secondary school that bore the name of Erich Boltze ; at the same time the vocational school for druggists was located there . From 1994 until the merger in 2007, the school was named Wieland-Herzfelde-Oberschule after the writer and publisher Wieland Herzfelde .

Former Bühring high school

The former Bühring secondary school was built according to plans by Carl James Bühring and opened in 1910. During the Nazi era it was called Günther-Roß-Schule , from 1951 Johannes-R.-Becher-Schule as a modern-language so-called "a-branch" and Oberschule II Weissensee as a mathematical-scientific so-called "b-branch" and from 1960 to 1993 Paul-Oestreich-Schule (later EOS " Paul Oestreich " ) and had around 700 students as a general high school. From 1993 until the merger in 2007 the teaching facility was called Bühring-Gymnasium after the Weißensee master builder.

particularities

Block lessons with the subject room principle

At the Primo-Levi-Gymnasium, the classes (with the exception of the 5th and 6th grades) do not have a fixed classroom, instead the subject room principle applies. Each subject and each teacher has its own classroom that contains the necessary teaching materials. In order to avoid too many time-consuming room changes between the classes, lessons are usually taught in lesson blocks of two regular lessons.

Bilingual teaching

Since the 2012/2013 school year, one to two bilingual German-English classes have been set up at the school each year for the pupils in grade 5. The students in grades 5 to 8 receive more English lessons, from grade 7 the subject of biology is taught in English with an additional lesson, and the subject history is taught from grade 9 with an additional lesson.

MINT EC school

The Primo Levi school is part of the national Excellence school network MINT-EC schools with secondary and pronounced profile in M athematics, I nformatik, N aturwissenschaften and T technic (MINT). In addition to numerous activities in the MINT area, the Primo-Levi-Gymnasium is home to the Pankow Student Research Network .

FSJ project

Since the 2006/07 school year, a young person has been completing a voluntary social year (FSJ) at the Primo-Levi-Gymnasium with the aim of strengthening the opportunities for young people to participate in the school through their work. In addition to supporting the student council and promoting projects from the student body, the FSJ's tasks also include organizing their own projects at the Primo Levi grammar school. The FSJler's office is located in the student club. The FSJ is financially made possible by the school support association.

Student club

In house B of the Primo-Levi-Gymnasium there is a student club, which is managed and designed by the FSJ students with the support of committed students. The former caretaker's apartment was refurbished in 2007 on the initiative of the friends' association and the student council and offers a table football room and numerous sofas as well as a few computers and desks for doing homework. During breaks, free periods and after the end of school, the students have the opportunity to stay in the student club. There are also numerous events organized by the students or the FSJ, including foosball tournaments, poker tournaments and film evenings.

During the three-day simulation game, about 25 people are debated in committees. The overall student council is headed by the student representative and his three deputies. These are supported by a school parliament consisting of ten committed students from lower and upper grades. This body usually meets once a week in the student club. Once a year there is also a student representation trip, during which specific projects are planned. At the moment, the student council is primarily involved in helping refugees.

School development association

The development association of the Primo Levi grammar school was founded in 1993 as a school development association of the then Bühring secondary school and has been the association of the newly merged Primo Levi grammar school since 2007.
