The Prinz-Willem-Alexander-Brücke ( Dutch Prins Willem-Alexanderbrug ) spans the Waal , the southern arm of the Rhine in the Rhine-Maas Delta , between the Dutch communities West Maas en Waal and Neder-Betuwe . The Provinciale Weg N323, which connects some villages between the Waal and the Maas with the Rijksweg A15 in the north, runs on the cable-stayed bridge with square prestressed concrete struts that was built between 1972 and 1974 . The structure is located at Rhine kilometer 910.80 and kilometer 52.91 of the Dutch waterway 101 (Rhine – Waal– Boven-Merwede – Beneden- Merwede – Noord ).
The structure with a total length of 1419 meters consists of an 807 meter long foreland bridge. The stay cable construction extends over a length of 612 meters. The span of the main span is 77.5 m + 95 m + 267 m + 95 m + 77.5 m. The two pylons are each 57 meters high.
The building is named after the then Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander (King of the Netherlands since 2013), the bridge is also nicknamed Brug van niks naar nergens (German bridge from nothing to nowhere ). The bridge's two-way lanes led to a normal country road in the south, as the planned continuation of the route to the A50 near Oss was never implemented. Until 1996, a toll was due for the crossing , but this only compensated for a fraction of the construction costs due to the low level of use. In February 2008, a hemp plantation was discovered in a cavity in the beam .
A new construction of the N322 road to the east in the direction of Nijmegen and Oss was built by around 2012 , so that the southern end of the bridge is now better connected to the road network.
