Priscos is a town and municipality in northern Portugal .

The Parish Church of Priscos

Priscos is known nationwide for its annual Christmas crib Presépio de Priscos , which is considered the largest living Christmas crib in Europe.

The place is also known for its dessert Pudim abade de Priscos ("Pudding of the Abbot of Priscos"). The pudding was invented by the parish priest of Priscos in the middle of the 19th century and is now part of the town's coat of arms.

history

Of particular importance for the local history was the knight D. Paio Ramires , Knight Templar and lord of Priscos, father of the crusader Gualdim Pais . As a companion of the later first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques , he was instrumental in the victory over Theresia of León (Afonso's mother) in the battle of São Mamede in 1128 and thus made a contribution to the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal that followed.

The abbot Manuel Joaquim Machado Rebelo (1834–1930) , who came from Vila Verde , was later also of national importance . He was pastor of the Priscos parish and was considered one of the most important chefs in Portugal in his time. The famous Pudim abade de Priscos comes from him.

The pudding Pudim abade de Priscos was among the candidates in the gastronomy category in 2011 for the election of the "Seven Wonders of Portugal" ( Sete Maravilhas de Portugal , organized by the Portuguese Ministry of Culture and accompanied by Portuguese television , with the successive elections between 2007 and 2017 in the six categories of monuments, Portuguese heritage worldwide, nature, gastronomy, beaches and villages).

Christmas crib

Every year on every weekend before Christmas until well into January, the historic center of the village is transformed into a large nativity scene , which is considered to be the largest living nativity scene in Europe. Over 800 people (as of 2017) depict everyday scenes from the time of Jesus in 90 pictures (including craftsmen, civil servants, soldiers) and show not only Bible scenes but also Jewish, Roman and Egyptian culture and crafts.

This Presépio de Priscos ( Portuguese for Priscos Christmas Crib) has been held every year since 2005 . The project was initiated by parish priest João Torres, and meanwhile prisoners from the Braga prison are helping to rebuild it in a rehabilitation project.

The oversized Christmas crib attracts many thousands of visitors every year and receives nationwide reports. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has already visited the Presépio de Natal .
