The Propylaen World History (subtitle: A Universal History from the Beginnings to the Post-War Period ) is a German-language standard work on history , edited by Golo Mann , Alfred Heuss and August Nitschke , published by Propylaen between 1960 and 1965 in eleven volumes.

A Propylaea World History had already appeared in the 1920s / 1930s (ten volumes) and the early 1940s (four of the planned six volumes) .

Authors and conception of the work

In the new version, Heuss was responsible for the volumes on antiquity, Nitschke, together with Mann, those on the Middle Ages and Mann on the modern times. A large number of respected researchers from different disciplines contributed to the Propylaea world history, each of whom wrote articles for the individual volumes. These include:

Heuss as well as Nitschke and Mann also wrote several articles themselves.

In contrast to previously common representations, the editors and authors broke away from Eurocentric thinking and the conception of a unified, linear development of history in favor of pluralistic and non-progressive thinking. The inclusion of cultural history , the history of religion and the history of science were also groundbreaking .

Even if the work has been overtaken in some areas by more recent research, it still represents one of the few attempts to convey world history to a generally historically interested audience. Several contributions, such as that of Heuss, enjoy a very good reputation to this day. In 1999, the Propylaea World History was also published in electronic form on CD-ROM ( digital library , vol. 14).
