The Klosterkirche (also city church ) is a Protestant church in Hornbach , district of Südwestpfalz , Rhineland-Palatinate . The church is the parish church of the Protestant parish of Hornbach in the church district ( deanery ) Two bridges the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate . The church is listed in the register of cultural monuments in the district of Südwestpfalz.

history

After the Reformation was introduced and the Hornbach monastery was abolished in 1557 by Count Palatine Wolfgang , the three-aisled former monastery basilica served as the Protestant church. After the collapse of the choir in 1705, part of the central nave was used as a Protestant church. When the church was no longer usable due to its disrepair , it was decided in 1783 to rebuild. The parts used as a church were demolished and used as building material. The new building was built south of the former monastery basilica, with the north wall of the new building being placed on the foundations of the former central nave and the former south aisle and the south transept were built over. The new Protestant church was consecrated in 1786. A west tower of the monastery basilica initially served as the tower. The plans for the church building, with 525 seats, came from the ducal Palatinate-Zweibrücken building director Friedrich Gerhard Wahl . The 42 m high tower of the church, visible from afar , was built between 1841 and 1844.

After being damaged in World War II , the church was restored in 1951.

architecture

The church building was built in the style of early classicism . For cost reasons it was decided to build a simple, rectangular hall with a hipped roof . The church building has five window axes , with a side portal integrated into the middle axis on the south side . The main portal is located in the tower of the church, which was only placed in front of the west facade of the hall building in the 1840s. In 1895/96 a Protestant rectory in the style of late historicism was built near the church.
