Powder Tower (Schlanders)

The “Powder Tower” from the west

The so-called Powder Tower in the market town of Schlanders in Vinschgau in South Tyrol is located on the edge of the Sonnenberg . It is located in the street "Sonnenpromenade" and is number 2.

It is a formerly small medieval tower, probably from the 17th century, which probably belonged to the Schlandersburg residence and whose original purpose is no longer known. Until November 1918 the ammunition depot of the 1st company of the kk Standschützen Battalion Schlanders was located here , which had its shooting range about 50 meters north of it .

After the annexation of South Tyrol by Italy, shooting was banned and the shooting range was shut down (broken off in 1941). The building, known colloquially as the Powder Tower, was converted into a residential building, which greatly changed it. Almost nothing is recognizable from the original structure.

The building has been empty since 2014.
