St. Egidius is a Roman Catholic church above the village of Kortsch in the municipality of Schlanders in South Tyrol . Due to its exposed location on the slope of the Sonnenberg and its whitewashed facade, it is a landmark in Vinschgau that can be seen from afar .

history

Remains of a first Romanesque church have been preserved in the nave of the current building. This church was originally dedicated to St. Vigilius , only later was it rededicated to St. Aegidius .

In the 14th century the church was expanded to the west. The striking tower with a stone helmet was also built. The late Gothic apse , which ends in a five-eighth closure , was built around 1500. At the end of the 16th century, a cross vault was drawn into the nave .

In the course of secularization , the church was profaned in 1788 . The rededication as a branch church took place as early as 1790 .

The church was last extensively restored in 1985.

Furnishing

Interior of the church

The interior of the church houses frescoes from different centuries. Some of them were rediscovered during the 1985 renovation. The oldest frescoes are on the south wall. There is a founder (end of the 12th century), a saint with a crown (around 1300) and the martyrdom of St. Sebastian (around 1400). Since these frescoes are older than the vault of the nave, which was drawn in around 1596, they are partly covered by this. The image of the story of creation , which is also on the south wall, was created shortly after the vault, as was the tendril pattern that adorns it. The frescoes in the choir also date from this period . Here the descent from the cross (north wall), the birth of Christ (north-eastern wall of the choir) and Mary with the baby Jesus (in the apex of the choir, behind the altar) are shown.

Originally there was a small winged altar in the church , which was created around 1510. In 1906 this was transferred to the parish church of Kortsch , where it is still located today. The figure of the church patron Aegidius, which is placed in front of the fresco of the Nativity, is a copy of the figure of Aegidius, which is in the shrine of this altar.

In the basement of the church tower there is a small sacristy that also serves as a bell chamber.

On the south wall of the church is a monumental fresco of St. Christophorus attached. It dates from around 1330 and was painted over with a smaller depiction of the saint in the 16th century, which was removed in 1985 and is now inside the church.
