Kemathaus in the Schlossgasse

The Kemathaus (also called stone cellar ) in Schlanders in South Tyrol is located on Schlossgasse halfway between Schlandersburg and the Heydorf residence . The house built on the north side and adjoining Schlandersburgstrasse is much more recent and has nothing to do with the Kemathaus.

history

The age of the house can be dated back to the 14th century. In 1333 a "courtyard at kemnat" is mentioned for the first time. At the end of the 17th century, Johann Franz von Heydorf, who also owned Heydorf in the neighborhood, appears as the owner. He probably had the modifications carried out that are still present today. At the beginning of the 18th century the Heydorfer sold the house to an unknown master craftsman. In 1738 a tailor lived in the Kemathaus, but he did not fully use it, around a quarter of the property remained vacant. In 1779 a weaver is mentioned as a resident of the part that had remained vacant up to then. After the First World War , the Steinkeller family is named as the owner. This family preferred to take up the option ( option in South Tyrol ) after 1939 and move to Germany. She sold the house to the father of the current owner.

Building

The house is a three-story building with a single-hip gable roof and an exceptionally high ground floor. The basement rooms, bricked up against the slope, served as storage and storage rooms. On the side of the street there is a brick staircase with a delicately crafted wooden baluster railing . The staircase leads to the living rooms via the access hall. The entrance door is rectangular. On the third floor, an artistically designed rectangular bay cantilevered over the entrance . Its parapet is decorated with a recessed quatrefoil with the all-seeing eye of God. On the south side of the bay there are frescoes that did not exist on the north side or have since disappeared. A coat of arms with the inscription “Saller 1675” is attached to the wall to the left of the bay window. The last floor is a mezzanine floor with small rectangular windows under the eaves . The corners of the house show a square painting.

The building has been a listed building since October 24, 1980.
