The Church of the Holy Trinity (also called Spitalkirche ) in Silandro in Vinschgau was the church building belonging to the Heilig-Geist-Spital . A similar church can only be found in the surrounding area in Latsch .

history

The reason for the construction of the church was the conversion of the previous infirmary on the Schlandraunbach into a hospital. First a modest chapel was built in the vicinity of the Ladurnhof and the small church of St. Jenewein . In the early 16th century, this chapel was replaced by a new late Gothic church, which was placed in the south-east corner of the hospital complex and was consecrated in 1519. The master builder was Caspar Reuter, from whom a baptismal font has been preserved in the church as a foundation . The procured in 1520 offering box was in the city museum of 1904 Merano brought.

The severe floods of the Schlandraunbach in 1517, 1697, 1705, 1719 and 1731 were documented in the church records. The damage caused by this resulted in structural changes.

On October 24, 1980 the building was listed as a historical monument.

Building

The church is built on the southern (narrow side) of the Heilig-Geist-Spital, the nave runs in an east-west direction. The building with the obligatory choir polygon shows the corner blocks and walls made of white marble , which are often used in this area . The bell tower with clock has closing as a special feature in the triangle acoustic window. The roof consists of an octagonal helmet covered with wooden shingles and thus strongly resembles the tower of the parish church of the Assumption of Mary . Four cantilevered iron gargoyles are attached to each corner under the roof attachment . The nave has two pointed arch windows of the same size in its south wall, while the choir has two pointed arch windows of different sizes. On the south wall there is a sundial in the upper left corner . At an unknown point in time, the ribs of the nave vault were removed; instead, paintings by Joseph Adam von Mölk were attached showing scenes from the life of St. Nepomuk and a view of Schlanders from the time before the new church was built. This is one of the oldest views of Schlanders at all. Older paintings date back to 1516 and were executed by master Andreas in secco painting. 170 m² of wall area and 120 m² of vaulted area were painted. Among other things, they show the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and Saint Stephen . Most of the paintings on the wall surface were exposed in 1952. The last general renovation of the church took place between 1994 and 2000.

Due to the constant increase in the level of the street over time (e.g. due to mudsling), the entrance can only be reached via a staircase about one meter deep.

additional

Since July 2014, a Holy Mass in the extraordinary form of the Roman rite has been held in the church at 6 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month .

The church is generally locked and only accessible during a guided tour of the village.
