St. Nikolaus is a branch church in the Vetzan fraction of the market town of Schlanders in Vinschgau in South Tyrol .

history

A flood of the Fallerbach on June 16, 1840 triggered the so-called “Faller Lahn ”, which destroyed the previous building of today's church, and the pastor was also killed. This was the storm ringing rushed into the church, and had then tried to get into the sacristy to safety. Only the Romanesque tower substructure remained.

The new building that was then built followed in the classical Viennese engineering style and was consecrated in 1845.

Building

The nave consists of a two-bay nave with pilasters and heavily cranked entablature, which also includes the round apse . In 1895 the current roof was placed on the tower.

St. Nicholas and St. Blaise

Since the liturgical equipment of the old church had been destroyed, it had to be re-purchased during the construction period. However, some older sculptures could also be put up. Two wooden figures of the church patron St. Nicholas and the bishop Blasius stand out here. They are located in the chancel and are relics of a late Gothic winged retable from the end of the 15th century.

In the old part of the cemetery around St. Nikolaus there are the traditional cemetery arcades, especially in the upper section of the Vinschgau . They are distributed over the rather massive surrounding wall. The wall was also laid out as protection against further mudslides, with a wayside shrine of St. John Nepomuk providing help.

Others

After the flood disaster of 1840, the Vetzans vowed to hold a solemn high mass and a procession every year on the day of St.Margreth (July 20th) .

Along with the Schmalzhof and the Runggnöf, St. Nikolaus is one of three listed buildings in Vetzan.
