Pushkar with lake |
Pushkar ( Hindi : पुष्कर Puṣkar ) is a historically and culturally significant small town with around 22,000 inhabitants (2011 census) in the Indian state of Rajasthan .
location
Pushkar is located on the holy Pushkar Lake in the Aravalli Mountains in the foothills of the Thar Desert about 145 km (driving distance) southwest of Jaipur . The next larger city is Ajmer, about 12 km southeast .
population
The population consists almost without exception of Hindus. As is customary in censuses in northern India, the male population is about 15% higher than the female.
economy
While the residents of the place used to live mainly from the nomads who breed cattle and camel caravans passing by, nowadays tourism plays the largest role. During the camel market in November, a tent city for around 10,000 visitors will be set up.
history
The year-round water-bearing lake has been an important resting place for caravans and a cattle trough for nomads since ancient times . In the Middle Ages, a Brahma temple was built on its bank - the only significant one in all of India.
Attractions
- The Pushkarsee with its ghats and surrounding temples is considered sacred to many Indians. Every year many devout Hindus make a pilgrimage here to wash themselves clean and to ask for health for their families, whereby the Brahmins resident in Pushkar help them in return for a small donation.
- Today's Brahma temple is said to date from the 14th century.
- The annual November camel market ( Pushkar ka Mela ), which attracts hundreds of thousands of people, is one of the largest in the world.
