The gobies of the genus Elacatinus live in the coral reefs of the Caribbean , the Gulf of Mexico and on the Pacific coast of Central America . They are slender, small fish, mostly only three to four centimeters long.
Some of the 28 species, including the grouse goby ( E. evelynae ), the neon goby ( E. oceanops ), as well as E. genie , E. Ilsebrosus , E. prochilos and E. randalli are also called cleaner gobies and use the ecological ones in their habitat A role of cleaner wrasse from the Indo-Pacific , which is missing in the Caribbean. They clean larger fish at so-called cleaning stations , their drawing resembles the cleaner wrasse and probably feed exclusively on the parasitic small crustaceans that they eat off the skin of their "customers".
Another part of the species, including E. chancei , E. horsti , E. louisae , E. tenox and E. xanthiprora live in tube sponges and feed mainly on the small bristle worm Syllis spongicola , which colonizes the sponges as a parasite.
