Life cycle

The representatives of the family live on land ( terrestrial ) or in water ( aquatic ) or in both habitat types ( amphibious ). Among the species that live on land, there are parasites that can cause deadly diseases in plants and animals.

The diploid stage dominates the life cycle. After a brief haplophase initiated by sexual and asexual reproduction ( homothallism dominates within the family), the gametes fuse and the diploid phase continues.

The sporangia can grow out through a germ tube or release mobile zoospores . This varies from species to species, but it also depends on the environmental conditions.

Economical meaning

Some Pythium species cause seedling, root, stem and cob rot in young plants (seedlings). In the case of crops, damage is to be expected.
