Pythio ( Greek Πύθιο [ ˈpiθjɔ ] ( n. Sg. ), Bulgarian Кулели Бургас , Turkish Kuleliburgaz ) is the easternmost place on the Greek mainland. Together with the smaller settlements Rigio and Stathmos , the village forms the local community Pythio ( Topiki Kinotita Pythou Τοπική Κοινότητα Πυθίου) in the municipality of Didymoticho of the municipality of Didymoticho in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace .

The local community Pythio (Τοπική Κοινότητα Πυθίου) is located in the far east of mainland Greece where the Evros forms the natural Greek-Turkish border . Neighboring local communities are Sofiko in the north, Asimeni and Prangi in the west and Petrades in the south. The village itself lies on the high bank on the west bank of a tributary of the Evros.
history
In the Middle Ages, Pithion was the center of the lands of the powerful regent and later Byzantine emperor John VI. Kantakuzenos . Around 1320 he had a castle built, the ruin is on the northeastern edge of the village.
railway station
Pythio was opened in 1872 during the construction of the İstanbul Sirkeci – Swilengrad railway line by the Orientbahn . After the annexation of Western Thrace to Greece in the wake of World War I , the route was north of Pythio Greek and as an extension of the coastal here they route Svilengrad ( Bulgaria ) - Alexandroupoli (- Thessaloniki powered). The station also became the Greek border station for the only railway line between Greece and Turkey. After crossing the Evros, it reaches the Turkish border station Uzunköprü after a few kilometers .
The border crossing used in scheduled passenger traffic until February 13, 2011 two daily pairs of trains: The Dostluk / Filia Express , a night train on the connection Thessaloniki- Istanbul -Thessaloniki, the sleeping car led, and the day train Istanbul-Pythion-Istanbul, the only one Car existed. Since then, all cross-border rail traffic has been suspended here for economic reasons.
