Qadian ( Panjabi ਕ਼ਾਦੀਆਂ , Urdu قادیان DMG Qādiyān ) is a small town ( Municipal Council ) in the Indian state of Punjab , about 120 km from Lahore . It is located in Tehsil Batala in the Gurdaspur district .
history
The city was founded in the 16th century by Mirza Hadi Beg when he and 200 followers settled on the site of today's city center. Mirza Hadi Beg gave the settlement the name Islampur (" Islam City").
When Mirza Hadi Beg received a jagir from the emperor , the place became the seat of the magistrate and was named Islampur Qazi (or Qadi). The name Islampur was gradually dropped; the village was only called Qadi and eventually became Qadian. The village was henceforth the seat of the family, and despite the distance from the capital Delhi, members of the family held influential state offices under the rule of the Mughals .
Qadian is the birthplace of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad , who is a descendant of Mirza Hadi Beg. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad is the Messiah and Mahdi of the Ahmadiyya movement, which he founded in 1889. In addition, the second, third and fourth caliphates ul-Masih of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat , Mirza Bashir ud-Din Mahmud Ahmad , Mirza Nasir Ahmad and Mirza Tahir Ahmad , who acted as successors to Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, were born in Qadian.
The city was initially the center of the Ahmadiyya movement. After the partition of British India in 1947, she moved her seat to the Muslim, i.e. now Pakistani, part of Punjab and founded the city of Rabwah there .
