Qu Xiaosong (瞿小松, also Qu Xiao-Song ) (born September 6, 1952 in Guiyang , Guizhou Province , southwest China) is a Chinese composer . His sensory music is a synthesis of nature and culture, but also a fusion of the Western and the Far Eastern.

Life

Qu Xiaosong was 14 years old when the Cultural Revolution broke out in China . He had to work as a farm laborer for farmers in remote Mio for four years. Like hardly any other Chinese composer, he has been deeply influenced by this experience to this day. Qu graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing in 1983 . After that, a series of works emerged that arose entirely from the spirit of Chinese folk music , such as the three cantatas: Mong Dong (1986), Cleaving the Coffin (1987) based on a legend about the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi and Mist (1991). In 1989 he was invited to the Center for US-China Arts Exchange at Columbia University New York for a scholarship; since then he has lived in New York City. In 1990 he started his seven-part work cycle Ji ( Silence ). Silence is not a pause here as in western music, but rather the most important musical event itself. Qu Xiaosong received commissions from the Holland Festival , the American Composers Forum, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the Musica Viva Boston . His operas Oedipus and The Death of Oedipus celebrated in 1993 and 1994 premiere in Stockholm and Amsterdam ; His chamber opera The test was in 2004 by the Munich Biennale given and the Contemporary Opera Berlin commissioned and premiered in May of 2004. Qu Xiao-song teaches composition at the Shanghai Conservatory .
