Queenie Smith
Queenie Smith (born September 8, 1898 in New York , † August 5, 1978 in Burbank , California ) was an American actress .
life and career
Smith graduated from the Metropolitan Opera Company's ballet school at a young age and made her Broadway debut in the musical comedy Roly-Boly Eyes in 1919 . Over the next fifteen years, Smith appeared in a variety of musical comedies. One of her most notable roles was the lead role as "Tip-Toes" Kaye in Tip-Toes in 1925, where she sang the classic song That Certain Feeling by George and Ira Gershwin . In 1929 Smith appeared in The Street Singer on Broadway, during which time she dated actor Archie Leach, who would later become a world star as Cary Grant . Smith moved to Hollywood in 1935 and appeared in the film version of Show Boat as Ellie May Chipley a year later . In 1947, the actress took on a role in Anatole Litvak's film noir Die Lange Nacht ( The Long Night ) on the side of Henry Fonda and Barbara Bel Geddes .
Smith taught drama at Hollywood Professional School for many years and was director of Melodyland Theater in Anaheim in the 1960s. From the mid-1960s, the actress took on various television roles as "little old lady", for example as Mrs. Amanda May Whipple in five episodes of the family series Our Little Farm . She also made guest appearances in An American Family and the Waltons . Her last role was in 1978 as Elsie in the comedy A Very Crooked Tour with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase .
Smith worked until she died of cancer in 1978. She died a month before her 80th birthday.
